James Bates, Chief Executive Officer at n2s, said: “The TePAS 2 framework will allow Public Sector bodies to promote sustainability as they manage technology assets, by providing end to end services for the lifecycle of technology products.  We are delighted to become a supplier on this framework, which will open new opportunities for n2s to further its reach across .GOV and the wider Public Sector.  Providing services on this framework will play an instrumental role in the growth of our business, building on the successes to date in delivering sustainable IT and circular services in the Public Sector.

“We take great pride in our work delivering services and products that support the Public Sector in these challenging times and are committed to helping organisations access sustainable solutions that support their net zero ambitions.”

Showcasing Circularity in Tech: BT Sustainability Festival 2023

As a BT partner, n2s had the pleasure of exhibiting at the BT Sustainability Festival this year, bringing together some of the best minds in technology and sustainability.

Attendees to the free event met our talented security-cleared engineers, sharing how we use bacteria to recover precious metals and how IT lifecycles can be managed better for a circular economy.

Our event team of 13 had a great day conversing with customers and learning how BT’s ecosystem of partners is helping to build a sustainable future.

n2s Managing Director Steve Morris discussed the concept of a ‘circular economy’ and what it takes to make it a reality. The panel talk ‘Closing the Loop: Designing for a Circular Economy’ was well attended and received. Watch on demand.

Full Tech Amnesty bins

Event attendees had the opportunity to unearth their old mobiles, laptops and tablets found loitering around their homes to participate in the tech amnesty and witness the impressive operation of ‘Shredasourus’, our mobile, equipment shredding truck. It was incredible to see all three tech amnesty bins full at the end of the day to be securely and sustainably disposed of.

We will soon share the carbon, water and resources collectively saved from tech recovery at the event.

Protecting Your Data and the Environment: Meet our Secure Services Manager

Companies usually look to upgrade their equipment every 3-5 years. At n2s, data destruction services can be offered across any UK location using a data equipment shredder truck (rightfully referred to as the Shredder-Saurus by the n2s team).

Stefan Jones is Secure Services Manager at n2s and heads up technology recovery and data destruction projects for the public sector.

We recently caught up with Stef to find out more about what he’s up to:

Tell us about your role at n2s

I’m the Secure Services Manager at n2s and joined the company as a field engineer in 2007, after a 20-year career as a hydrographic surveyor. Part of my role is managing technology equipment recovery and data destruction projects from initial contact through to destruction and reporting.

I’m also part of a small team responsible for gaining and maintaining our various ISO certifications (data security, health & safety, quality and environmental) and have just overseen our recent certification audit with the National Cyber Security Centre.

Can you tell us more about this National Cyber Security Centre certification?

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) Commodity Assured Service Scheme for Sanitisation demonstrates compliance with the IS5 standard for organisations serving government customers.

In layman’s terms, this means we can work with Government and Military equipment containing data classified up to “Secret” level.

What is your favourite part of your role?

I love working on trickier jobs!

We sometimes face fieldwork challenges on jobs recovering equipment from old buildings with small doors, tight stairwells, no parking and restricted access times make the logistics planning interesting manoeuvring server cabinets in buildings that were never designed to hold modern technology is a challenge, but these projects are very satisfying when they go to plan!

Supporting BT Group on Their Move to Circular Networks

BT Group are working to be circular by the end of March 2030 and a circular tech and telco ecosystem by the end of March 2040.

As part of that mission, BT is rolling out new, energy-efficient, high-speed mobile and fibre networks. To ensure a sustainable transformation, BT has formed an Exchange Clearance Operation (ECO) and is working with us to remove, reuse and recycle their old legacy network.

ECO involves recovering equipment from old telephone exchanges and reducing e-waste. This year alone, n2s will support BT in extracting 200 tonnes of copper cable, generating millions of pounds from recycling and the resale of redundant network equipment.

BT Group are also taking a plunge into our innovative bioleaching process developed with Coventry University and Bioscope to extract and recover precious and critical metals from technology equipment for re-use.

We are proud to collaborate with BT Group on this project which Is working towards and promoting a circular future.

n2s and KA2: FSTech Collaboration of the Year Winners

KA2 and n2s crowned FSTech 2023 Partnership or Collaboration of the Year for developing COzPro – a data-driven solution for organisations to comprehensively measure, model, review and reduce IT carbon footprint in real-time.

The combination of internal and external thought leadership and domain expertise enabled the development of this unique solution. On the global journey to reach carbon net zero, the app is a massive step towards a circular economy within the financial sector as it sets carbon reduction targets by visualising current and future carbon footprints. The dynamic data will enable organisations to drive decisions supporting IT hardware procurement, retention and disposal strategy.

“This prestigious award celebrates excellence and innovation within the UK and EMEA financial services. We are proud to have been recognised and honoured to have played an essential part in this project to create the innovative tool managing carbon emission reduction within the financial sector.”

“Working with such a specialist partner in KA2 allowed our data to become relevant in this quest for technology to decarbonise. Special thanks to Chriss Andrews, CEO, Jean-Marc Jefferson, Head of Sustainability and the rest of the KA2 team.

Andrew Gomarsall, n2s Executive Chairman

Regulators, including the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), want greater focus and transparency concerning environmental reporting on Greenhouse Gass Scope 3 emissions. These indirect emissions occur most prominently in the financial services value chain. Qualified data and insights are required to please regulators and support ongoing carbon reduction initiatives.

We will continue working with KA2 to add further functionality, dashboards, and reporting capabilities to provide financial services with the visibility needed to decarbonise their IT estate, operations and supply chain. The circular environmental solution will also be evolved to measure and manage the return journey for redundant IT.
