IT disposal and decommissioning – a proactive approach

A major part of our business at N2S is the disposal and decommissioning of IT and telecommunications equipment and systems. Our clients have many different reasons for wanting to decommission their current IT equipment. From systems and equipment having reached the end of their useful life cycle (they become inefficient and need upgrading) to major changes in strategy, such as a move toward cloud or utility computing.
Whatever the reason, the team of engineers at N2S have the experience and skills to safely decommission any IT and telecommunications equipment with rigorous procedures and operating practices in place to ensure the security of both your services and data throughout the process.
N2S understand the paramount importance that our clients place on their data. Recent changes to legislation such as the Data Protection Act and industry standards such as PCI (Payment Card Industry) as well as the reputational and business damage that can occur as a result of data security breaches, form the foundations of our decommissioning process.
All IT and telecoms decommissioning and disposals undertaken by N2S are carried out by trained engineers who work to operational, security and health and safety standards. This is reinforced with our certified and accredited data erasure and on-site hard drive destruction services. This ensures our clients and their customer’s peace of mind. All decommissioning programs are supported by both a pre-site survey and a detailed risk assessment.
It is for these reasons the N2S service is highly respected and trusted among IT and telecommunication professionals.
Examples of recent projects:
- Decommissioning of 3,000 servers, SANS, DWDM switches, firewalls, DMZs and Secure Gateways across two geographical locations for a client that also required guaranteed data erasure and hard drive destruction of highly sensitive data.
- Decommissioning of over 1,400 servers, storage silos, tape libraries and associated network devices across multiple halls in a large List X data centre.
- Removal and disposal of equipment and on site hard drive destruction. This project also required the removal of almost 13kms of under floor cabling, the result of which was a substantial improvement in cooling, reduction of carbon emissions and lower overall operating costs.
- The closure and decommissioning of a suite of telecommunication switches and associated equipment for a Global fixed line Telco operator across multiple European sites. N2S designed and managed the programme for removal and secure destruction from start to finish. N2S also removed all associated cabling and power supplies.
What do we actually do?
- Work with the client to agree a strategy for checking all the assets to be decommissioned and if necessary build a complete asset register then construct a plan for the safe removal of power and network connectivity
- Provide a team of trained engineers and logistics support to safely remove equipment
- Advise the client of any security or service implications and take a proactive approach to dealing with data, operational and service integrity
