Disposal of IT accessories

Disposal of IT accessories - cables

An additional service provided by N2S

With millions of PCs being replaced and upgraded every year we often forget that peripherals and accessories like printers and PC monitors reach the end of their useful life, all of which contain toxic materials.

Whilst the WEEE Directive has made most people aware of the need to dispose of major electrical appliances and accessories responsibly this sometimes doesn’t extend to the range of IT accessories like printers, monitors and external hard drives.

The development of WEEE and national standards for the disposal of hazardous waste has been championed by the United Nations Basel Convention which brings governments together to regulate the disposal and trans-border movement of hazardous waste.  Using the Basel classification of waste few people realise the high levels of leader glass used within PC monitors. This can result in up to 80% of a PC monitor being classed as hazardous, whereas for PCs this is usually around 19.4%.

Printers also present a risk due to the fine particles that they contain which, although the constituents may not be toxic, can be dangerous if inhaled. There is also a security risk with many of the larger networked photocopiers and printers using data storage facilities to retain document data.

N2S can dispose of your accessories to comply with the highest environmental standards and through our robust security processes ensure unintended data leakages are avoided through our data erasure and destruction services which also apply to printers and photocopiers.

Contact N2S now for further advice on disposal of IT accessories and peripherals.
